A legendary magic longsword, +3 and dealing bonus damage against vampires and undead within 30 feet. Shapeshifts into whatever weapon its wielder imagines. Its blade and hilt were deliberately separated long ago by a powerful magician trying to destroy it; only the blade has been recovered, and the campaign ends with the hilt still lost.
History
- Found as an unidentified shapeshifting sword lying in the middle of an active fire trap in the flooded basement; Jake braves the flames to claim it, and it takes the form of a glowing blue rapier when he imagines one 2022-12-26 @ 03:58:19–03:59:58.
- Used to pry open Strahd’s coffin, referred to in the moment as “Dawnblade” 2023-02-12 @ 00:42:03.
- Found buried with Sergei von Zarovich’s body in the catacombs is a second piece: the Sun Sword’s own blade, alongside magic armor 2023-01-30 @ 03:53:07–03:54:21.
- A Spellcraft check identifies the sword Jake has been carrying since the gas-trap session as the Sun Sword’s blade — +3 vs. undead with 10 bonus damage vs. vampires within 30 feet — but confirms its hilt was separated from the blade long ago and remains lost 2023-01-30 @ 04:10:16.
Unresolved
Whether the “shapeshifting sword” found in the fire trap and the blade found in Sergei’s crypt are literally the same physical object, or two related pieces, is not entirely disentangled in the notes — both are identified as “the Sun Sword’s blade” by the piss-coat session, and Jake is the one carrying it throughout. The sword’s hilt is never found in the recorded sessions.
